Betrayal and Brutality: How Two Young Men Killed Their 17-Year-Old Friend for Ransom in Lagos
Psalm 41:9
“Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.”
On April 22, 2026, tragedy struck in Lagos when 17-year-old Thompson Adams Omokafe, who had just written his UTME examination, was betrayed and killed by people he trusted.
What Happened in the Ibeju-Lekki Kidnapping
Two young men, Elijah Emmanuel (23) and Tony Ogenata (21), lured Thompson, a former schoolmate of one of them, to their apartment in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
They held him captive and demanded a huge ransom of ₦150 million from his parents. While still negotiating with the family, the suspects allegedly strangled Thompson to death. His body was later dumped in a canal around Awoyaya.
Even after the murder, the suspects continued contacting the family, reduced the ransom demand, and eventually collected ₦200,000 through a POS machine in Itamaga, Ikorodu. They fled to Ikorodu but were tracked and arrested by the Lagos State Police a few days later.
The Chilling Confession of the Suspects
In videos released after their arrest, Elijah Emmanuel and Tony Ogenata calmly recounted the crime with little visible remorse. One of them reportedly said he wanted the money to "build a house for his father" and "be set for life." They admitted to the kidnapping, murder, and collecting ransom even after killing Thompson Adams Omokafe.
Police Action and Current Status
The Lagos State Police Command, under Commissioner Fatai Tijani, confirmed the arrest of the two suspects. As of late April 2026, they remain in custody and will soon be charged to court for the kidnapping and murder of Thompson Adams Omokafe.
Cases of this nature are capital offences in Nigeria. If found guilty, the suspects could face the death penalty by hanging or life imprisonment. Thompson’s family and many Nigerians continue to demand justice.
A Painful Reminder
This sad Lagos kidnapping case serves as a strong warning to young people and parents alike, be extremely careful even with people you think you know. Always inform your family of your whereabouts.
As we pray for justice in this painful case, let us remember the words of Scripture:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
May Thompson Adams Omokafe rest in peace. May his family find strength, and may justice prevail. 🙏
